PTSD and The Body: Understanding the Benefit of Trauma Sensitive Yoga
Substantial comorbidity exists between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Substance Use Disorders (SUD). According to the Veterans Affairs, almost 1 out of 3 Veterans seeking treatment for SUD also have PTSD. More than 1 of every 4 Veterans with PTSD have SUD. The overlap likely increases when the full criteria of PTSD is not met, such as with developmental and complex trauma.
When experiencing trauma, our nervous system responds to the environment to ensure survival. Much of the time, after the trauma is over, our bodies continue to respond as though we are not safe. Trauma Sensitive Yoga can help individuals learn to feel safe in their bodies and calm their nervous system. This training will:
· Provide a brief overview of the neurobiology of trauma
· Highlight how trauma sensitive yoga differs from traditional yoga
· Discuss how trauma sensitive yoga provides healing to PTSD and complex trauma
