Persistent Challenges Dot the Terrain of America’s Evolving Drug Use Epidemic

Learning Objectives

1. Participants will be able to better understand aspects of the drug use epidemic that are not fully captured by overdose data and highlight the underappreciated contribution of illicit stimulant use to the total burden of drug use among people who have a substance use disorder.
2.  Participants will be able to become even more familiar with the changes in information regarding the continued rise of stimulant use, both with and without fentanyl, which suggests that cocaine and methamphetamine are readily available in the illicit drug supply and that demand for these drugs continues to grow—fueling the ongoing “fourth wave” of the overdose crisis.
3. Participants will be able to observe changes in national overdose death rates and delve further into what may be contributing to these changes.

Presenter

Kelly Olson, PhD

Presenter Bio

Dr. Kelly Olson is a neuroscientist, an author, and keynote speaker who believes that assessing and addressing disease requires an integrative approach. Kelly’s ability to illuminate the molecular misadventures that lead to disease is what makes her special – proving time and again that a splash of nerdy, with a big dash of passion, goes a long way. She has lectured all over the world as an invited session speaker and has authored/co-authored a number of peer reviewed articles, textbook and book chapters, books, posters, and presentations, all aimed at providing a clinically applicable compendium of knowledge to ultimately help healthcare practitioners get their clients/patients well faster. Kelly received her masters at the University of North Dakota and her PhD at the University of Manitoba.
