Program

Advocating for Change in Addiction Related Policy and Legislation

As addiction professionals it is in our best interest to influence emerging policy, both in Washington DC and Austin. While much attention is being paid to the national conversation, most of what influences our day to day operation occurs at the state level. Sam Rayburn, a US Representative from long ago, said, “All politics are local.” We will discuss building relationships with state officials, how to have your voice heard, and share ideas on connecting locally with your elected federal officials to influence current legislation and bring the local picture into focus. A novice in advocacy will be prepared to get started, and the more experienced will get new ideas.

Learning Objectives

*Understand the importance of engaging in the policy conversation as a constituent – in the role of service provider, employer and voter.

*Describe ways to begin and/or further a relationship with elected officials

*Discuss current state and national policy and legislative issues pertinent to those in recovery and family members, prevention and treatment providers, and recovery support organizations
